The U.S. Senate today has failed to obtain sufficient votes to invoke cloture and advance the Continuing Resolution that would fund the U.S. government and extend the EB-5 Regional Center Program, as well as a host of other U.S. immigration Programs, until Dec. 9, 2016. The vote was 45 yea, 55 no.
Ostensibly the reason for the negative outcome has nothing to do with EB-5 or immigration generally. The Senate vote, largely but not exclusively on party-lines, comes amidst opposition from Democratic lawmakers on the CR’s lack of funding for the Flint water crisis.
Stakeholders will await a new compromise amongst the Senators as the U.S. government heads towards a deadline that would create a government shutdown on October 1 without funding legislation. As we previously reported, if the program is to be extended at this time, it likely will be through a CR.
