Good News for International Students: No More Co op Work Permits Starting April 2026

April 9, 2026:  International students in post‑secondary programs across Canada will soon benefit from an important change to the rules for student work placements.

As of April 1, 2026, post‑secondary international students will no longer need a separate co‑op work permit to complete required work placements, including co‑ops, internships, practicums, and similar placements that form part of an academic program. This change applies to students enrolled in eligible colleges, universities, and other post‑secondary institutions.

Until now, many students were required to apply for an additional co‑op work permit before starting a mandatory placement. Beginning in April 2026, eligible students will be able to complete required placements under their study permit alone, provided they continue to meet all study permit conditions.

It is important to note that this change does not remove all work‑related rules. Students must remain actively enrolled in their program and in good academic standing, and the work placement must be connected to their studies. Jobs or internships that are not part of a program requirement are still subject to Canada’s regular on‑campus and off‑campus work rules.

This policy change is a welcome development for international students, making it easier to gain Canadian work experience and reducing administrative barriers during their studies. Students should still be cautious and confirm that any work opportunity qualifies as a student work placement under the new rules.
