For many immigrants to Canada, deciding to study in Canada is the first step in becoming Canadian. Graduates from designated Canadian colleges and universities are often eligible for post-graduate work permits. Depending on the length of your program and other eligibility criteria such language proficiency, eligible students may obtain a post-graduate work permit with a validity for up to three years. This means you may be able to stay in Canada after graduation, earning valuable Canadian work experience that may form the basis of any future application for Permanent Residence.
In order to study in Canada, you must be accepted into a designated learning institution and have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay. Prospective students should also keep in mind the general requirement with some limited but notable exceptions to submit a Provincial attestation letter or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) along with their application for a study permit.
If and when you are issued a Canadian study permit, full time students at the post-secondary level and in approved programs are generally authorized to work part time during the school year, and full time during regularly scheduled study breaks.
International Students who plan to study in Canada for more than six (6) months, and who have resided in certain countries within a year prior to their arrival in Canada will be required to undergo a medical examination prior to being granted a Study Permit.
