It is exciting to announce that our book “Temporary Entry into the Canadian Labour Market” is now available to readers who are seeking to learn all about the various categories and requirements pertaining to a foreign national’s temporary entry into the Canadian labour market. Writing this book alongside Stephen Green, Cristina Guida and Peter Salerno over the last year was equal parts challenging and rewarding for all of us and it is a pleasure to be able to share some insights on that experience with you.

We wrote this book to provide readers with a clear understanding of how a foreign national can enter and work in Canada along with the opportunity to access first-hand knowledge and information that can only be gained through years of experience practicing in the field of immigration. Collectively, with my author team and our general editors, Cathryn Sawicki and Chantal Desloges, I truly believe we have accomplished that goal.

What is special about this book is that it is not just a replication of the information a reader might find on the policy pages of the Government of Canada’s website, which is a primary public source of information on this subject. The layout of the book was structured purposefully. The sequence of topics within each chapter and the overall subject matter from one chapter to the next, give the reader a foundation of information by which to understand the content of the following sections. Unlike a website or article which can quickly turn into a maze of clicking on links in search of the answer to a specific question or clear explanation of a process, by reading this book cover to cover, a reader is sure to gain a thorough and overall understanding of how and why Canada facilitates and controls the temporary entry of foreign nationals coming to Canada to work. The book focuses on both the underlying eligibility criteria for different categories of workers and explains the processing requirements for workers and employers, such as how, when, and where to file an application.

As we wrote, reviewed, and re-examined each section, we spent a significant amount of time thinking about the questions and issues that we have encountered in our own experiences over the years and poured our collective knowledge into the pages of this book. Our sole purpose is to provide a clear yet comprehensive overview of all the intricacies associated with the field of immigration.

  • the role of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency in the administration of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;

  • the refusal of an application for work authorization and potential remedies such as requests for reconsideration and judicial review;
  • access to Information requests under the Privacy Act;
  • grounds of inadmissibility;
  • inadmissibility reports issued under section 44(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and other consequences of non-compliance with terms and condi­tions of a work permit;
  • eligibility criteria and how to apply for a temporary resident permit; and
  • employer compliance and inspections, including employer obligations, what prompts an inspection, and inspection outcomes.

This is a book that I wish was available to me years ago and I am very grateful to have this opportunity to share this information with future readers.
