The Government of Canada announced today that the Pathway to Permanent Residence for refugee claimants in the health care sector will come into place as of Monday, December 14, 2020. This program was announced in August 2020 and will allow certain refugee claimants who worked in the health care sector during the COVID-19 pandemic a direct pathway to permanent residence.
This program is open to foreign nationals with pending or failed refugee claims, who made claims prior to March 13, 2020, and have worked the designated number of hours in one of the select occupations. Specifically, the program is open to nurses, nursing supervisors, nurse aides, orderlies, patient service associates, allied primary health practitioners, and select home support workers.
The spouses or common law partners of foreign nationals who died due to COVID-19, but would have otherwise qualified for the program, are also eligible to apply.
The family members of the principle applicant who are currently residing in Canada will also be granted permanent residence as long as they meet the criteria, such as admissibility.
Applicants wishing to reside in Québec will also require a specific Certificat de sélection du Québec and meet the Québec -specific requirements of the program.
