This year, the American Bar Association Section of Labor & Employment Law International Labor and Employment Law Committee had their Midyear Meeting from May 5-9. The event was held at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. For almost 40 years, the International Labor and Employment Law Committee has conducted meetings in major cities abroad. Each year, they discuss employment law practices and foreign labor relations law affecting U.S. multi-national enterprises overseas with leading labor relations and employment law experts.

On Thursday, May 9, U.S. Practice Director and Managing Partner Jonathan A. Grode of Green and Spiegel was a panelist  during The Impact of Legalization of Marijuana in the Workplace and on Transferring Employees from Legal to Non-Legal Jurisdictions. This panel discussed how cannabis is causing problems when traveling between neighboring countries where cannabis is legal for medical and/or recreational use in one, but illegal in the other. Countries such as the U.S and Canada, as well as Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are currently experiencing these issues. Panelists covered current laws in these countries and how it can affect both employers and workers when traveling for business or pleasure. Jonathan’s presentation focused extensively on the issues Canadians working in the legal cannabis industry north of the border have when entering the U.S.
