New Ministers Announced for Immigration, Labour

November 4, 2015 – Following the recent election of a Liberal majority government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his new cabinet, including a new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and a new Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

The Honourable John McCallum has been appointed Minister of renamed Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. Mr. McCallum is the Member
of Parliament for Markham – Unionville. Most recently, Mr. McCallum served as Liberal Party critic for Citizenship and Immigration, and has served previously as Minister of Defence and Minster of Veterans Affairs. Before being elected as an MP in 2000 Mr. McCallum served as Chief Economist at the Royal Bank of Canada and has held several academic posts, including Dean of Arts at McGill University in Montreal, and as a professor of economics.

Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour

The Honourable Ms. MaryAnn Mihychuk has been appointed Minister of the newly renamed Ministry of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour. Ms. Mihychuk is the Member of Parliament for Kildonan – St. Paul in Manitoba. Ms. Mihychuk is a former member of the Manitoba Legislature, where she served as Minister of Industry, Trade, and Mines, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Minister is a geoscientist and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Winnipeg and a Master’s degree from Brock University.

What does this mean?

These Ministers will be charged with implementing the Liberal Party vision for immigration and citizenship in Canada. The Liberal platform included numerous commitments, from doubling the quota for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program to removing visa requirements for Mexican nationals.
