Canadian Immigration
Overview
Under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, only Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the right to permanently remain in Canada.
Immigration is the process of moving to live permanently in Canada when one was not born in Canada, or born to a Canadian parent. A person who has immigrated to Canada is called a "permanent resident." After a period of residence in Canada, a permanent resident may apply to become a citizen of Canada.
Canada is one of only a very few countries (including the United States, Australia, and New Zealand) which actively seeks out newcomers as immigrants and encourages them to become citizens.
